Vauxhall Zafira 2002 - Oil filter over tightened! #

Hi

The cap for the oil filter has been done up by a Gorilla!

It is the all alloy set up and when I tried to undo the cap eventually the housing started to move. There doesn't seem to be anything I can "Grab" to restrain the filter housing so that more torque can be applied to the cap.

I suspect if I continue to try something will break. Will the broken bits then be easy to remove completely or will it cause damage that would be difficult to repair.

If anybody else has had this problem, I would be interested to know how you solved it!

I suspect the housing has already been damaged as it has twisted. I seem to remember there are locating lugs on the housing which break when it twists. As a result if the housing is not lined up correctly after you're done the oil ways will be out of line and you'll have poor oil pressure.

Sorry can't help with an idea on holding it. I've seen the cap break whilst trying to remove it before. The housing is held on by 1 center bolt (imagine the thread you'd wind a canister oil filter on to). Prob best to price up for a new housing and just remove as required.

As Matt said, it's a single centre bolt in the bottom of the filter housing. Very large Torx if I remember correctly.

Hi Paul,

Replace the whole housing it will have broken when it twisted !

I had same scenario on a Vectra not realising the housing was damaged, even though it did not leak after filter replacement immeidiately but it did the next day,my dealer had the housing in stock and was not expensive

Thanks for all replies. As a matter of interest, how did you get the old housing off without causing further damage?

As posted above, undo the one bolt that holds the housing to the block.

Always easier to advise with a engine code.
