Hi, I believe this is a v40 of around 2001 era but not 100% sure.

However i do know it is a 2 litre ,5 cylinder 10 valve petrol.
anyway as it came in with broken timing belt and tensioner pulley after the normal bent valves have been replaced and the head skimmed and replaced i came to the timing issue.
it all appeared straight forward and to the book.

All the timing marks were at 12 oclock. The crank was clearly marked as in the book and so was both cams. After fitting it i went to give it the usual 2 clockwise turns to find it contacted the valves before it had moved no more than an 8th of a turn.?

I had removed the pulleys when the head was off but marked them, however in desperation i tried every possible sequence as there was 3 different positions possible for both cams.each time the valves contacted in about an 8th of a turn.

Anyway i took the cam cover off after this and worked out where to expect the valves and it looked like the original way i had it was right or very close to it anyway so it went back together.

STILL no different,

Now i will tell you my next step which worked but i still dont understand why?

Both camshafts have been marked with tippex at 2 points before the belt had snapped. One mark was clearly on the factory scribed timing mark of which everyone wnows you would use.(ignore the other) If you put the scribed marks at 12 the extra tippex mark would be about 10 oclock on the exhaust and about 2 on the inlet.

I put these 2 temporary marks to the 12 oclock position meaning exhaust went about 8 teeth clockwise and inlet 8 anti clockwise.
Problem solved?? WHY
