Hi guys,
One of our customers came in today with a very peculiar fault, their C-Max automatic won't give them their key back! Basically on the cluster their is a column showing the various park, neutral, drive etc to the left and a large letter in the centre showing what gear you're in; see below
When park is engaged, the little 'p' flashes and no big 'P' is displayed and the ignition won't release the key, see below
I've checked all DTCs and live data using IDS and there are no faults in any of the control units and when observing live data every relevant control unit shows that park is engaged (and the other gears too if they are selected). There were software updates available for for both PCM and TCM but neither of these have made a difference.
The only remotefully useful bit of information I can give you is it has apparently happened a few times before in the past and the customer has cycled through the gears a few times and it's fixed itself!!
I'm at a total loss as to what could be the issue here? What controls key release? cluster? Broken wire between cluster and barrel? Live data in cluster recognises park is engaged though and it shows up on dash albeit flashing! Any ideas will be great fully appreciated!??
Thanks for your response Ian, I spoke to the customer today explaining that the best I can do is have a look around to see if there is anything obvious and she understandably decided she needed to get if fixed asap due to obvious security issues and so is taking it to ford!! she has promised to let me know the outcome and so I will let you know when I do!
thanks Craig

The customer rang me today to say she had to have a new "gearstick unit" fitted and a total cost of just under £400, she wasn't best pleased about the price but was glad to have her car working again!!
