BMW Mini 1.6 2002 - Wipers have failed - Fixed #

Hi

Wipers have failed tried earthing body of motor no live feed to motor i think ive traced it back to control unit down by o/s kick panel as kts can see switch working do these units have to be coded in as i will try and get a s/h one as its my nippers car

Paul so the relays are good then?

the control unit unit you are referring to at O/S kick panel, is the BCM yes?

BCM will need coding.....

Hi Paul,
I did one of these a few years ago when the wipers would'nt turn off - even with the key out!
I seem to remember it was as Darren says and the whole job including diagnosis, fitting and yes, coding (by someone else) came to around £700 to the customer.
Madness! just to turn the wipers off. Another reason why I think the BMW Mini is such an awful car!

i can not beleive how complicted cars have become, why do we need a bcu on a car to operate the wipers etc, why code it ok to stop me and you fitting it but what about the cost to joe public even at a dealer it would cost a fortune,i can understand ignition and fuel injection being complicated for better ecomony etc, sorry rant over just fed up with the motor trade at the moment after 35 years ive had enough

You have not seen anything yet.

Wait for next wave of vehicles 2011 / 12 cars that become 4 or 5 years old.

The latest Ford focus has more advanced features and technology today , than a 2001 Mercedes S class had in its day.

It's only going to get harder. Serious equipment and training investments will be needed. If you don't your customer data base will get smaller and smaller . FACT

even the simple jobs are no more.

battery replacement - needs programming
Tyre change - TPMS programming
brake pads - electric parking brake , CBS
Oil change - oil life needs resetting
Wiper motor / blades - need basic setting programming

This is happening across all makes and models. Nothing is as it was.

its crazy industry we are in.

Yes, as always, technology advances.

Just attended a course on new automotive technology and you get used to the advances. Just dont let it intimidate you.

After all there was a day when the alternator was new technology and im old enough to remember that. At the end of the day it is all invented by the human brain, so dont let it get to you. The day you lose interest in the challenge is the day you give up.

but why do we need it we dont its not benefiting anyone, people will get fed up with paying huge bills just to get there wipers working,i can see now why people are turning to lease purchase one bill a month covers the car,servicing,insurance,warranty etc. and could any one tell me what scan tool could code these units please thanks paul

If my memory serves me correct the BMW specialist I used had Autologic.

Totally agree our customes are already fed up paying expensive prices for control units that fail.
Just fitted a bc1 and power steering pump to a mini bill in excess of £900 felt sorry for the young girl a months wages gone in one visit to us and she still needs a run flat tyre.

In answer to the question i use Autoloogic to programme the unit.

REALLY!!!!

You might as well throw it around the workshop for a bit, put 300 notes down the toilet, refit it then scratch your head a bit longer...

As in my first post have you looked at a diagram, you have not even replied to confirm the relays are good?

If you ask for help then you could reply to my questions..

sorry daren yes i checked relays(2 in fuse box under bonnet ) there is one listed inside n/s fuse box but not fitted on this model thanks paul

Hi

Got bcu back and there was no fault found with it, turned out to be a broken wire on the multi plug coming out of bcu, wire had broken right on connector

We had an Audi A5 yesterday for a drivers side window regulator. The regulator came with window seal and a new door ecu (Modified Part)and that needed coding too.
