BMW 530d 2002 - Intermittent problem with air suspension #

hi guys currently looking at my old mans bmw 530d touring been having intermitant problems with the air suspension not working and a massage on dash saying air suspension inactive, the heated seats have stopped working (no response from switches)and sometimes the unlock/lock on the key will not work and wipers have the occasional day off as well.

I also have no communication with air suspension/ immobiliser/air bag and switching (h/seats)modules despite power and grounds present and probably more on the k bus line although i am limited to which modules i can access as i have only got a modis and a friends launch the instument cluster has codes
87 k bus,
BE internal error light module,
bd internal error instrument cluster,

as the modules with no comms are all linked via the k bus i have scoped the k bus at the modules concerned and get a constant 3.3 volts disconnecting some modules on the k bus this rises to around 5 volts, according to wds bmw this should be 12v switching to 0v in 5ms to 30ms messages
Ok so at the minute im working on if i can restore the k bus i can get comms with affected modules to start looking at the problems iv got but secretly hoping that all the problems are linked to the k bus being down
Do you guys think im going down the right path do you have any suggestions would you agree with my thoughts /findings so far any help here would be great as im getting a little over my head at this point

I take it you're scoping the bus? What diagnostic machine are you using?

Your K-Bus signal is not good if that's the readings you are getting,

This is a good K-Bus signal

The above capture is the same wire just captured in two different places

Do you have a wiring diagram? Can you post your captures? Can you post a Capture of K-Bus at instrument Cluster? and at the switching unit or airbag and post up

Thanks for the response guys. Matt im using a snap on modis , Darren i have scoped the k bus at the instrument cluster and other modules on the k bus just a straight constant voltage of around 5v if i disconect the general control module behind the glove box this drops to 3.3v and if i disconect the instrument cluster this drops to 0v,
I will try and upload a capture today to show you thanks for the capture this confirms what i found on wds bmw site so i definitly have a problem.
Do you know which module supplies the voltage for the k bus from what i have read i think the general control module is the master for the k bus and the instrument cluster is a stand by controller do one of these supply the votage so the k bus can be active and ready to support messages. www.e38.org/bussystem.pdf (this is where i got this info)

darren i have been using bmw wds which i found online for wiring diagrams of the k bus

Hi Lee not sure if this an e39 or e60/61, I have had very similar faults with several e60/61 touring models due to broken wires at tailgate hinges/roof area, hope this may be of some help

hi stewart the car is an e39 sorry forgot to mention, thanks for the input i have had the same on an e60/61 and it looks a similair design on the e39 i will check if any modules in the tailgate are on the k bus if so a short could be possible thanks for the idea

UPDATE this repair is still ONGOING i have so far tracked it to either a faulty aux heater or heated seats module i will post fix once i finally get time to finish the job

all the problems i have had with k bus
on e39 bmw has always been the aux heater in
n/s/f wheel arch
disconnect the heater and see if everthing else
comes back on line

thanks kevin im looking at the aux heater being at fault although the repair is on hold due to me having a bump in it ooops
