Ford Focus 1.6 FYDB 2002 - VSS no signal - Fixed #

Speedo fault. No VSS signal.

I am testing the sensor as a hall sensor. ESI agrees with this. Outer pins are supply and ground, both ok. The middle pin is the signal. There is nothing on this (.05v) unplugged but plugged in has .9v with no change when moving. Am I right in thinking I should see a voltage coming from the ECU for the sensor to pull down?

As a rule yes, I would agree with you.

But you know what the word assume does to both of us.

I have one coming in tomorrow morning for some work, I will have a look if you like?

I've looked on my old ford WDS machine and the waveform for the VSS (example waveform) is 0-12v square waveform with a freqency increase as speed varies.

Snap-on component test meter lists vss test as the same.

I would expect it to be digital ok, but I would expect it to show a ref signal voltage from the ecu depending on the reluctor position. Also the .9v coming from the sensor is odd.

Well you live and learn, Pins 1&3 are power and earth (NBV)

And pin 3 OUTPUTS a voltage of 9.00 volts or 0.00 depending on rotor position.

It does not modify a reference voltage sent to it.

Hi Mark,

You live and learn is right. I have always been aware that there is more than one type of hall sensor but I never found one like this before.

Stragne, Snap-on obviously got this wrong in there Component test meter description which is the 2nd item i've noticed in 1 week of using it to be wrong.

I think some earlier Vauxhall's use a 0-10v output for the VSS as well.

New sensor bought and fitted with confidence based on Mark's input.
