Ford Granada 2.0 DOHC 1994 - Non start - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 1994
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 2 litre dohc

Hi

Car cut out on old customer and he towed it into garage.it has immobiliser system but it seems to work ok.There is no spark at distributor.Tried sh coil and coil lead,still the same.Have not got diagnostic lead to get a readout.Havent worked much on this model

Any ideas out there

Suggest check the crank position sensor located beneath oil filter on right hand side of engine.Plug in diagnosis is very basic on this model.

Does this car have the Bosch immobiliser system with separate remote fob and flashing led on dash panel?

Is this the model with single button key fob to unlock the car? From memory I think it also disarms a separate immobiliser which disables the starter, fuel pump and ignition feeds, its possible for just one cicuit to fail. I think its located somewhere behind the radio, lots of black wires

Thanks for help,it is model with bosch immobiser behind radio with maybe 10 to 12 brown wire connection.it has single button fob with red light in front of dash clocks which react to fob.it will not crank engine until fob is used.Fuel is pumping with no spark.When you turn on ignition you get a spark through coil lead for split second and when you crank no spark.Probably immobiliser or crank sensor.Any ideas which one itry 1st or if i get sh immobiliser does it have to be coded in?

You have 2 options here.Repair the unit.They usually suffer with dry solder joints on the pcb.A re-flow with new solder and a good iron will fix them.Alternatively remove the unit and discard and then re-instate the 3 immobiliser cuts to the efi/starter circuit.Look at the back of the plug ,facing the wire entry side,plug locking tab at top.From left to right,top row,cut and join ;1 and 3..2 and 5..and then 7 and 8.This will restore system to standard.

Hi Liam,

Although diagnostics are as already mentioned very basic on these, I seem to remember it coming up with useful fault codes for a situation like this. Again from memory from the symptoms you describe, the crank sensor was troublesome, plus something that has not been mentioned yet, the ignition module.

Hi Liam,

I would have thought the inertia switch would cut off the fuel and not the spark. I doubt you are no where near me (Scunthorpe) otherwise I would plug in my old Ford kit for you. If you wish to borrow an ignition module for this, I might have one laying about somewhere.

Hi Liam

I have never worked on one of these but,

check for crank sensor at ecu pin 55(blue yellow) and 56(blue green)

Check Ignition Amplifier
Pin 4 ign feed 12v (black)
Pin 6 Chassis ground (brown)
Pin 2 ECU coil turn on signal (blue red)
Pin 5 Primary ground circuit (green)

Check ign coil
IGN 12v
Primary current

Have you got a scope or a logic probe?
Make sure the ecu is sending the signal to the ign amplifier.

The fuel shut off switch appears to only have control over the fuel pump

Thanks again for help,I bypassed immobiliser and still no spark.Next step is crank sensor.My customer is locating one and i will try it then.No real time to stay at job.Thanks ,pete for offer of plugging it in but i am over in tipperary ireland and it is a long long way to tipperary

Havent got back to car yet,dont have a scope for testing crank sensor.What other method can i use to determine if its ok or not.Thanks again.

Hi Liam

Try your miltimeter on A/C, you will not be able to see if the signal is corrupt but I would have thought you will get a reading of the average.

I don't normally use this method but I have just tried it on a fiat stilo for you that has got crank sensor issues when hot, but is starting at the minute.

I got a reading of 3.34 cranking with the sensor disconnected.

Try it with the sensor unplugged and go across the terminals, then at the ECU.

Try it on a car with no issues.

This really is a job for a scope.

Have you managed to confirm the tests from my other post?

I've had a BMW X3 in our garage/yard since April i think. Customer can't decide or hasn't the money to supply me with a new Turbo and DPF so he's using a loan car from us.

Its a good thing actually as i'm to busy at the moment to do it anyway.

Peter, car is just a 2nd vehicle for an enthusiast and he is in no rush.He is into cars so i am just following his instructions.Sometimes it is easier to do as he says as he is able to source old parts and it takes pressure off me.We will see what happens next.No panic yet.

Went back to Granada after nearly 2 months and gave a few hours checking it out. Found wire had broken under inlet manifold which was carrying live and linked to ignition module which when repaired provided the pulse to fire up the module and start the car. Very little room to work under manifold but all is well now.
