Jaguar S Type 2.5 2004 - Cylinder head gasket replacement #

Hi Guys

I have the above coming in next week to renew both cylinder head gaskets. Never done one of these before just wondered what they are like etc. And do you need the special tools Autodata describe.

Never took the heads off of these engines but have changed an engine on an X type,

Must say that was a tight fit so if the S type is similar i'd guess you'd be better to remove the engine to do the head gaskets.

Not much fun changing the spark plugs either but i wouldn't know where to start by changing the rear bank CAT on one.

Hi Keith

I changed the big end bearings and a conrod on a one of these a while back. I remember it being a pleasure to work on.

There is plenty of room to do the job with the radiator pack out of the way. The only grief I remember it giving me was the inlet manifold bolts are long and thin and take some time to get out in one peice due to corrosion. A couple broke on me but left plenty of protrusion for easy removal after the manifold was removed.

I did this without a ramp so taking the engine out wasn't really an option for me. But dropping the engine and box through the bottom may prove to be a real time saver

Hi Keith,

We priced one of these whilst I have been on my hols at £900/950 was that too much if not a bad job to do?? (that included gen bolts at 113.12! + vat)

Hi Rob before I quoted on the job I rang the dealers and some specialists, the cheapest quote was £2250 inc vat, due to gas conversion ect. There job time was 14.5 hours and included all genuine parts and machine shop charges etc. I quoted £1725 inc vat. Customer said that was the cheapest quote. The parts alone was just short of £550 all dealer parts though. The heads were pressure tested and skimmed at £256. It took us 15.5 hours so not bad for first time. I think you would have been undercutting your selves at £900/950. Autodata gave 12 hour job.

Hi Keith,

We priced dealer parts at alot less but suspect the headsets priced up would have just been the head gaskets and we hadn't allowed for pressure test and skim x 2

think we scared the guy off anyway! I will be adjusting the price if he rings back to book in...
