Renault Clio II 1.2 2001 - Central locking fault - Fixed #

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of product knowledge on this one if possible. (thats a nice way of asking for a silver bullet btw)

Customer reports he parked, locked the car as normal and when he returned the central locking failed to work and the engine failed to start.

When I got the car the immo light was on solid, i.e communication fault. This was backed up by live data (Clip). The remote would re-sync manually and work perfect u til the engine was cranked then it failed again.
I checked for wiring issues under the bonnet, all ok and fault still present. I removed the UCH, wiggled wiring, unplugged it and plugged it back in. the car then started, remote re-synced and all working perfect. Now it wil not fail. I have checked the wiring back from the UCH, all looks ok.
I only unplugged the two small plugs from the UCH so I didn't power it down. In other words I didn't boot it.

Now to the silver bullet part. Anyone seen this before? Maybe I have missed a common wiring fault?

I didn't open the UCH either but that might be next. it looks clean and dry on the outside.

hi alan
is the aerial in the front or rear of the roof?
to be honest we either remove the immo from the engine ecu or fit a second hand uch and try it
dependant on how much the customer wants to spend

Hi Martin,

I am pretty sure its in the rear.

I had thought of removing the immo but if its a UCH fault, which it could be I think because the central locking played up at the same time, then maybe changing it would be the best bet.

I have had these occasionally come in as non start.
First one I had though had come in for an MOT test, after the test it was left in the workshop while we got on with other things, came to move it about an hour later and it wouldn't start. It had lost some other functions such as rear wiper and central locking was not working and immob light was on.

After trying several things I removed the UCH to check for water/damp ingress, it all looked OK.

Refitted the UCH and everything was fine. And the customer has had no further problems with it.

Probably had it two or three times over the last few years now - I have never got to the bottom of, but it seems to rectify the problem and have not had any further issues with the car since.

And they all seem to be about this age of Clio as well.

Two weeks later and its still starting ok. No further symptoms.

Possibly calling it "fixed" is stretching the meaning of the word a little but what can you do when dealing with quality systems like this.

Is that a statement, a question or a complaint Malcolm?

If you are asking what UCH stands for, I have no idea. I am pretty sure the U stands for useless but you will have to decide the rest yourself.

Well done Andy, after I spent the whole day wracking my pea sized brain I now wish I knew more languages than foul and slang !
