Ford Focus 2006 - Smart charge issue #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006

have above car in today ,customer is going through headlamp bulbs at an alarming rate!not chineeze! bulbs
suspected an over charge situation,however at 13.8v today,with smart charge plug removed 13.6v
pin 3 at batt voltage, pin 2 with scope has a good square wave from 0-13.8v however does not seem to react to consumer loads, the pulse width stays the same pin 1 which i would expect to be a constant pulse width varies with loadings and switches from 0-9.8v,my question is has the smart charge part of the alt gone?not scoped one before any help would be appreciated, keith.

pin 3 battery voltage
pin 2 varying with load
pin 1 constant square wave
are the wires to smart charge plug ok HTH

not 100% sure about the layout of this system compared to the transit connect but ive had a few of those where the alternator plug wires have corroded through between the plug itself and a second connector, located around the radiator area. you have to remove the not-so protective conduit for a visual inspection.
Dont know if this would cause your issue but worth checking.

Hi Keith, if there are any smart charging faults due to faulty wiring or alternator I would expect a corresponding fault code in the pcm. I have a couple of cars that seem to get through bulbs, try a different manufacturer, maybe from dealer?

Hi Keith,
It may be worth considering other causes?
I usually find it's cattle grids where I live but a regular journey on any bad road will cause this. Another thought is loose reflectors/headlamps but that normally gets noticed when the bulbs are replaced.
