VW Transporter AXD 2006 - Engine tuning over feels like hydro lock - Unresolved #

Hi trying to help a friend,
out of comfort zone, his 2006 cravelle is having difficulty on initial cold start with engine turning over feels like hydro lock.
battery is holding a good charge and earth return tests OK,
i think there may be other issues as well as he is loosing water and there are signs of water oil mix in the filler neck but not on the dipstick have had a look over the cooling system for leeks cant see any have pressure tester system with 7psi, engine off under pressure no loss or drop engine running the pressure isn't increasing however pressure drops with acceleration only slightly though.
have been looking into possible water pump fault but autodata is vague as to if its driven by the timing gears they only give 1.9 hours to change has anyone done one of these.
what kind of job is it to do

Water pumps could be one of your problems quite common . Gear driven and time is correct.

Also pull out the cam sensor and check for damage. If damaged the sensor disc. may be loose on the rivets.

hi kevin thanks for your answer cant seem to find any drawings for pump removal as its gear driven.
could i be a pain and ask you to explain the cam senor disc a little more, do you meen if the water pump has been a problem it may have stressed the rivits

Hi Martin,

Oil cooler's are a common failure on the AXD engine, I have done a few of them.

The cooling system passes 'sniff test' and doesn't pressurise excessively. Does have signs of oil / water around filler neck, also slight oil evidence in header tank.

already been mentioned but id check water pump first for the leak, sits behind a cover/plate just above gearbox towards rear of engine with the plate removed you will see the waterpump sprocket. remove this and pump is held on with two torxs or splines time is about right but have had one were pump had gone that bad that the sprocket had shaved heads of bolts and not being able to undo them which means a lot of messin about, oil coolers are common acording to my local tps not sure about thestarting issue tho lee

Andy i had checked the head gasket with pressure gauge and it gained no pressure whilst running.
i have no wish as an electrician to do the head gasket as have no access to the special tools required.
though i might send it your way it looks like such a nice job (laugh out loud)
Tony it does have the right signs for both the water pump or the cooler will investigate further
if this job fails i could always go the police for a job in CID as that's lots of investigation work :-)

I have had a similar problem with a Golf and that was a cracked cylinder head. It would sound like it was hydraulicing on crank up but was fine after that. Only when it was stood over night did the fault occur.

I've changed a few camshafts and followers on AXD engines now and not always on ones with high mileage (96k) or when the incorrect oil has been used. The last one I had in sounded tight on one cylinder as it cranked and it turned out to be because the lobes of the cam had worn round after wearing the surface of the lifters until they were 'punctured'. No unusual mechanical sound when running on this particular one by the time I got to see it but you could tell it was running lumpy. I don't know how healthy it sounds to you when it is running but the fact that your oil/water mix is only apparent in the filler neck and not on the dipstick would suggest more condensation from short runs than head gasket to me at the moment and possibly the coolant leak is unrelated. Don't want to send you down the wrong path but just wondered if you felt it sounds and feels nice and level when running. You might hear/feel it blowing back through the air intake pipe at the air box as a quick check. On the other hand I have a 2.0 petrol Audi A4 in at the minute with similar starting symptoms and that is leaking coolant across the gasket into cyl 4 but was easy enough to find with the videoscope down the spark plug hole. Without the aux heater running, does your vehicle always have hot air from the blower? Head gaskets on these tend to air lock the matrix.

thanks again the van is now having a breakdown after a short drive its inpossable to select gears unless you switch off and select gear then start and drive off
liam thanks for the email was most helpful
the van seems to be running fine as long as you don't want to drive it any where and it does only struggle with first start of the day but pressure test showed no fault
i think the van has had enough of life as the problem list keeps growing and they cant all be related
(clutch peddle seems fine)
