Core plug fitting question - What sealant to use? #

I am due to be replacing a core plug on an old sunbeam (1950's) It is the disk type rather than the bucket type (IYSWIM)

Is there a loctite type product that anybody might suggest to ensure a reliable seal or shall I just use silicone gloop like the last guy did??

(I only ask because the silicone option some how seems like a bit of a bodge)

Hi Paul

From memory as I have not fitted a disc one for probably 20 years, they do not need anything to seal

Make sure the surface area is clean, put the disc in and then tap the centre of the disc, this will slightly expand the disc giving a water tight seal

Remember when these were fitted in the 50's there was no silicone sealer's around. The core plugs rusted through quickly as antifreeze was only put in during the winter. The core plug was a safety feature, it popped out if your engine froze (no antifreeze)and prevented a cracked block

I have the plug, its just that it is in an awkward to get at place and I would just like to use a "Belt and braces" approach towards ensuring there are no leaks after I have put it back together. It would be annoying if I didnt get a perfect seal first time....

Hi Paul,
Peter is correct in saying that no sealant is required but if you do want a suggestion, what about a lock and seal made by Loctite or similar. Normally used for hydraulics etc but will work on almost anything.

Green Loctight if it is still available? Used to use it 40 years ago with this type of core plug; it sets rock hard and seals in cooling systems. The others are right no sealant required but any modern loctight product would suffice I would use bearing fit because the hotter it gets the harder it sets & seals.

Hi Paul.
we used to use red hermertite on these in the sixties, but as long as its cleaned out properly even a smear of touch up paint did the job used this method up until now never had a leak yet.

we did one of these on a moggy last month and used just a touch of red hermertite. no problems

What do these core plugs look likte, i've only ever replace the later type as used now.

Never use sealent on them either.

As Andy sugests I'd go with Wellseal... it does what it says on the errr tube!
