Alfa Romeo GTV Lusso 3.0 V6 1999 - Heavy ticking sound after timing belt replacement #

Hi All
Have just replaced the timing belt, tensioner, guide pulleys and water pump. Engine started up fine but at idle a sort of heavy clicking sound (difficult to describe in words)coming from the tensioner area of the engine. Although I used the proper locking tools and was confident timing was ok I rechecked just to be sure and did a pressure check on all cylinders which prooved to be ok.
As the noise was coming from the area of the tensioner I replaced it but alas still the same.
The owner of the car told me that on the Alfa forums quite a few owners had come across this after changing the belt but no suggestions as to cause and just ignored it but obviously I can't.
Thanks in anticipation and a Happy New Year to you all.

Hi Barry Sounds like your problem could be the camshaft variator. Cheers Mick
