VW Tourag 2.5 Auto 2004 - Cannot remove key from ignition switch on dash - Fixed #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 2.5

I cannot remove key from ignition switch on dashboard. Every time I turn key to left a message is displayed to select Park.
The info display shows that park is selected VDCS measureing blocks also confirms the selector position and I can view all selector movements.No history of flat battery,No fault codes in transmission convience or instrument modules
Is there a seperate circuit relating to above fault or has anyone seen this before I start to dismantle selector area.Thank you. Kevin

Hello Kevin, I assume the brake lights are working otherwise you wouldn't be able to move through the gears. I've looked on google & found that a passat locks the fob into the dash if the wrong one is inserted. To remove it says to press brake peddle & press silver gear change button three times then the key will be released. Can you see if the key is recognised? I still can't see why it says to select park though.

There is a VAG tech bulletin relating to a similar fault, but it logs the code -00288; control element for steering column lock - N360. Implausible signal.

This is remedied by replacing the ECU for start access & authorisation, which was updated in 2008 to resolve these issues.

The initial fix is to try a battery reset & see if the system reboots, if it does a new ecu is req'd as above.

Alan, Key is recognised I can remove key by pressing small buton with a pointed implement on the cowling but not a solution for the customer
Jon,No codes logged but will try battery reset on Tuesday

Spring broken in selector box that held microswitch for park selection signal to key lock
