Vauxhall Vectra C 1.6 2005 - Alternator not charging after rebuild - Fixed #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.6 petrol

Hi

Car came in with battery light on annd no power steering with all light on in dash. Removed alternator and got overhauled.

Started car and all seemed well. After 10 mins ticking over lights came back on in dash and lost power steering with car not charging. Turned off and car would not crank over. Disconnected battery for 10 mins and car started and charged ok. After 10 mins problem returned.Keeps repeating problem.

Anyone came across similar problem. Cleaned all block connections around engine to no avail?

Use texa axone 2000 diagnostics and read no problem,.After i plug out battery for 10 minutes it starts up and charges as normal for roughly 10 more minutes.Then when battery light comes on it stops charging and fails to communicate with diagnostics.When you turn off at this stage it will not crank engine again until you plug out battery and wait fir maybe 10 more minutes?

Genuine alternator will almost certainly cure the problem.

Fitted new factory unit and problem still the same.While it is charging can read on diagnostics under steeering stalk.Read codes u 21o3,u2105,u2108 and u2111,all linked to can/bus line or ecm.Anyone come across this before?

Hi,

You did not report these codes in your earlier post, so can I assume that they are only there after the new alt was fitted?

If so do you have TIS ?

Hi Liam, where did you measure the alt output? It may have changed but I was under teh impression that smart charge did not affect the alt mechanical charging ability. I was under imprwssion that there was still a regulator in the alternator, could you check voltage and current output at alt lead? Have you reset the battery sensor if it has one? Is it an AGM battery? Can you check the resistance of the can lines, should be around 60 ohms, can you scope can line and check signal out put?

Mark,had read no faults on engine management on our texa axone 2000 diagnostics.when i went into steering stalk section read fault codes.I have very little time to check as when it stops charging it loses communication with diagnostics.Using ammeter to check charging rate,when it starts 1st fully charging with all lights on etc,when dash lights come on it discharges .Have been told it is probably a fault in cim unit at steering column?

Have you got a wiring diagram for the vehicle and if so have you got all the frrds/earths that you should have?

Another way would be to use a scope it and see what signals you have when it works and what you lose when it stops working.

Hi Liam, if you disconnect the multi plug at the alternator, the system should charge, that will tell you if the alternator is ok. If you check can line with scope and then disconnect the steering control unit and see if signal changes that would confirm control unit corrupting the line. Check the resistance of can High and can lo for about 60 ohms for line integrity. Pin 6 and 14 is usal position for the can hi an dlo at DLC socket.

Fixed

Gave car to local auto electonics expert who specialises in electronic faults. After a lot of tests he changed engine ecu which is bolted onto end of head and problem is solved.He got second hand one and i think he had to code it in.Not sure about this but car is running fine now.Cost was 350 euro but car was no good the way it was.
