Audi A3 2.0 FSi AXW 2004 - Cooling fan running all the time - Fixed #

This came in this afternoon

The customer noticed the fan running last night when he got out the vehicle, but thought nothing more of it. This morning the battery was flat

AA called out and jump started and fan still running, pulled fuses but still running

I have check coolant sensors and both reading around 95 deg C with engine running (warmed up)

There is nothing in the archives, so did a bit of research, and its suggested the problem may be with the fan unit

Spoken to TPS and he said they supply quite a few repair kits, quite a common problem (both fans) at £197:00

Before I order up though I would check if there is any other test I need to do?

How much of a job to replace the kit

PS:

3 Fault codes are stored but not sure if they are related to my problem and battery is being connected and disconnected

18057 Powertrain data bus. Missing from ABS controller. Implausible signal - Intermittent

16885 Vehicle speed sensor - Implausible signal
No signal/communication - Intermittent

17439 Intake manifold tuning valve (N316) setpoint not reached
Upper limit exceeded - Intermittent

hi peter i don't know it this helps but i have had a couple of problems that might relate one was a vw sharan with fans on all the time narrowed it down to a faulty relay module the contacts within the relay were shorted.
the other was a cooling fan circuit fault on a vw passat but also logged faults on multiple circuits and that was THE 10Amp fuse that normally blows with the engine stop valve.

Hi Peter. Is the car fitted with dual fans and air con? I've had a couple of these fail in this way due to speed controller fault. This is built into the larger of the two fan motors. I changed another one last week on a VW Touran as well.

Yes this does have dual fans and air con

I have ordered up the fan kit from TPS, will be here tomorrow

The cooling fan controller is, as mentioned above, the larger of the two fans on the fan housing.

These do fail on the Audis & there is a kit available from Audi that replaces both fans as a repair kit.

If the kit doesn't cure it Peter,(which I'm sure it will!) the fans run off a duty cycle on the small green wire from the PCM.

Water ingress into the fuse box (E-Box) in front of the battery can also cause this fan running battery drain fault.

The fans can be run via an output test in the PCM to confirm the signal to the fan controller is correct.

If your fans don't run at all after fitting, check the fuse - 10A in the ebox, this feeds the control circuit. Knackered fan packs can run with this fuse blown.

Hi

Replaced the fans this afternoon and now all OK

Not to bad a job, all comes out from underneath

Had to do a global scan to clear all codes stored, but left with ESP and Electric Assist warning lamps on, these went off after a short test drive

Repair kit below
