Hi all, My 4 gas has just given up and I have temporarily acquired this Crypton 270 until my future business plans are a bit clearer. Does any one know how I can do a very rough calibration (I know that's a contradiction ) so I can use it for pre MOT testing. I am aware of the red arrows showing which screws to adjust after warm up but am not sure how to adjust the screws that have previously been covered with tape. I can obviously test it either in fresh air or with a car that has just been tested.
Any help would be much appreciated. Regards, Bryan.

Hi Bryan,
Not quite sure what you mean. I have had one of these for the past 15 years or so and although I have had it properly checked with a 3 gas sample, it has never had to be re-calibrated. This machine goes through a 10 minute check procedure during warm up and if all is well, the four readings will show zero's except for the 02 which will show exactly what your machine is showing. Your machine is showing 20 ppm hc's which is probably HC hang up. The only time mine requires manual adjustment with the micro adjusters is when the O2 cell starts to run down. The machine will tell you this with illuminated lights above the adjusters which indicates which screw to turn and in which direction. Once the adjustment is correct, then the light will go out. If you tried to fiddle with the adjusters, then the machine will let you know on next start up and will not work until you have adjusted it back again. The machine also shuts down every 30 minutes during use to check and recalibrate itself.... normally just as you are about to adjust the mixture setting on a carb or note the gas readings!
In summary, these machines are bomb proof, very accurate (although HC's are only measured in gradients of 20's). You should not try to adjust anything until the machine tells you so which is rare and usually indicates that the 02 cell is on its way out.
I am away for 2 weeks in Italy tomorrow so I cannot answer any further questions you may have, but if you are desperate you can voice mail or text on 07860829718.

Hi Pete, Thanks for the info. I did have one of these a few years ago so I am aware about the adjustments after warm up etc, but that is only for the adjusters/screws that have not been previously covered up (the smaller holes). For example, if I move the one for O2 (2nd from the right) whilst testing a vehicle I am able to watch either the O2 or the Lambda reading move accordingly. The HC (3rd from the right) seems to do the same. The corresponding CO2 adjuster (3rd from the left) doesn't seem to have any effect until after the pump is stopped and the zero button is pushed, but I think by pure guessing it seems to be about right. There is no screw under the grommet marked HC to the far right so I have not counted that one. What I have done so far is play around with it on vehicles with known emissions (after MOT etc) and I think it is about where I want it although I will continue like this for a few days and see what happens. I did have a trial of the Snap On portable machine but I felt the accuracy left a lot to be desired. Hope you have a good time in Italy, I was there myself for the Easter break which included a day trip across the border for a drive round the Monaco circuit. Regards, Bryan.
