Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi RHZ - Trying to locate flywheel timing pin #

Hi all

Can some one tell me, if there is a hole in the flywheel to locate timing pin. I have even removed the starter motor to see it more clearly, but I can not find one. According to Auto Data there should be. This car came in with part of the alternator belt inside of the casing to which I found after he said it would not start. There is an almost new cam belt on the vehicle but I need to reset marks to check if it has moved.

Hi,
Mike,I have never seen one without a locating hole in the flywheel,if the timing pin you are using is a tight fit in the block it can be a bit hard to insert in the flywheel,maybe try a pin thats a fraction smaller in diameter just to locate the position,Regards,Christy.

Hi Chris thanks for the info. I have removed the starter motor to see more of the flywheel. All I can see is an oblong slot at near TDC. If I set the crank up to it I then can not move the cam to correct position to locate the pin. I have not checked to see if the cam is on a key way or taper.

is it the one where you remove crank pulley
and pin goes through a hole in belt pulley
or i could be on the totally wrong track

Like Mark said, I had one years ago that was on the front as well.

Mike, is it touching valves or can it crank? You could scope ckp v cmp. I am sure I have a good trace somewhere to compare to.

As far as I know the early 406 1.8 and 2 litre petrol engines had the timing pin hole in the front pulley, you could not rely on the position of the hole in the pulley as they had a problem with the outer part of the pulley(with hole in it)rotating on the inner bonded part so giving wrong position, a bulletin was issued about this with a picture of the pulley so you could compare.
Generally on the diesels it is a 6mm pin that goes into engine bellhousing and locates with reference hole in flywheel

Mike, there is a hole in the block behind the starter that you insert the locating rod/bar through. You can see it from underneath the vehicle, all the Peugeot 406 HDI`s are the same.
