Mitsubishi Pinin GDi 2002 - Running on 2 cylinders - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002

This has just arrived running on two cylinders.
Scoped coils and injectors - strange trace on two injectors - suspect ECU has set limp mode. Will not clear.

Achieved comms after several attempts (Autodiagnos MT Pro), have retrieved code 3C01 (speed sensor)

Cannot find any information as to what this may relate to, either from Mitsubishi or Volvo.

No wiring diagrams (of course) on Autodata.

Any help appreciated.

What engine does it have? 4G63, 4G93, 4G94?

I am afraid there is a bit more you need to do to find your way here.

Using your scope you need to check the voltage and current on all the injectors at the injector driver ECU. Pins 23,24,25,26

When you know which ones are that faulty ones you need to scope the injector driver ecu for four good seperate injector driver signals that originate from the engine ECU, pins 10,11,19,20.

If these are good check the lives and earths of the injector driver ECU. Live pins 21,12 Earths pins 13,22.

Without knowing more it is hard to make a sensible diagnosis.

Up against it at the moment - builders in and a desperate customer.

This is the 4G94.

#1 and #2 injectors are the faulty ones. Trace shows a slight voltage spike, but no duration.

I'm struggling here with no information.

Could you let me know the location of the injector ECU so I can start to make head or tail of this, please.

You will find it on the drivers inner wing area. Usually thay are black with cooling fins.

Have checked current and voltages on injectors - traces seem strange to me - presumably due to this being a GDI

Voltage readings on two injectors are approximately double the other two, no amp readings on one (terminal 23)

No injector driver signal on pin 10. Have traced cable to main ECU - no signal there either.

Have I missed something? ECU looks a bit of a challenge to change due to security bolt access?

Hi Joe

Can you post a trace of the injector waveform? This waveform is very different from the normal EFi waveform.

I usualy probe the injector voltage, current and the driver for that injector. That way you can see the actual trigger from that injector.

Will do, Simon. Will be tomorrow or next week now- sun's out and there's a cold Crabbie's that needs attention. Ecu off to BBA for testing- definately no driver signal at pin 10. Suspect erratic amp readings due to injector condition, but will worry about that when driver issue sorted.

Hi. isn't this the model where the capacitors fall off inside the injector driver ecu. ?? ( the black one with fins, on the o/side inner wing as mentioned earlier ) and they
used to solder them back in and support them with a blob of silicon rubber. ??

BBA unable to check ECU.Now refitted to vehicle.

Took to local Mitsubishi dealer. They say injector drive unit is faulty. Seems strange to me as definitely no drive signal from pin 10 on main ECU...perhaps ECU shuts down driver signal if it sees a fault with driver unit? Have dismantled, but nothing obvious.

Anyway - £600+ for drive unit and no availability for several weeks. One for sale on Ebay at £45, but sold. Damn.

Don't suppose anybody has one? Part number: MR507766.

Did you fix this?

Were there any fault codes stored other than misfire ones? Is there poor throttle body reaction.

Ive had 3 of these with a magnet coming loose from the throttle body armature and causing the TB to stick. For some reason (I assume to stop the engine over reving when the ECU looses control of the TB)the ECU seems to introduce a misfire.

Probably way off the mark and its already fixed but thought I'd mention it!

Injector drive unit fixed this.

Still don't understand why there was no signal from pin 10 of main ECU. Many hours wasted on this pile of junk - not least waiting for parts.
