Landrover Discovery II TD5 2000 - Misfire on starting #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 2.5

Has anyone any ideas on possible fix. Engine misfires on start up hot or cold. No fault codes stored. Checked and fitted new glow plugs. Then rechecked, fitted new injector seals and rechecked. Have tried to find someone to check injectors but no one seems to be able to check for me.

Local Range Rover specialist thinks someone up north can check but cannot remember details, other local diesel specialist says only landrover can check with oe scan tool ?

Have you checked for engine oil in injector multiplug where it goes to the front of the cyl. head.

Did have a job a while back on a td5 ,where customer complained of intermittent missfire but no codes , after living with it for a period the vehicle broke down with engine ecm failure , the old injector driver fault they can suffer with.

Not saying this is your fault just some thoughts.

As lee has mentioned check for oil in the injector loom. It gets under the insulation and travels all the way back to the ecu if given enough time. Check the round plug on the head for oil around the pins and also on the ECM.

Hi everyone thanks for replies last time.To fill you in found that whilst cooling system left under pressure number one cylinder filled with antifreeze.So head was removed and could clearly see that head gasket had failed,could not see any other defects,sent for skim and refitted.Would appear that problem whilst less obvious is still apparent.Does anyone know whether the td5 suffer with block or head defects.Regards John

How about the water getting in the cylinder has done a little erosion on the bore , seen this a lot on the toyota lucidas when heads have been cracked, but would of thought you would have seen this on your strip down though
Water could have done some damage to injector nozzle, can you identfly which cylinder is missing with injector correction values ?

Try swapping an injector over to verify, maybe worth doing a compression test from cold.

We havent had any issues with cracked heads on thev td5 , someone else may know different

These engines do suffer from cracked heads. Fitted a brand new head (non-genuine, italian made I think, can't remember the make at the moment, but Turner engineering sell them)to a friends 10P TD5 as it had cracks in four combustion chambers, from the glowplug holes IIRC. They can also suffer from cracks around the injector seats at the top causing diesel contamination of the engine oil.
Oil migration from the injector plug through to the ECU is common and causes misfires. Don't think I've code read one of these without injector codes yet.
The Nanocom diagnostic tool works quite well on Discoveries and Defenders (not perfect, but what aftermarket tool is?) and only a couple of hundred quid.
