Vauxhall Combo Van 1.7 Di 2002 - Coolant loss #

( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1700 Di

Had a call from a customer to say that the water pump was leaking and could we change it, asked how he new pump was leaking, apart from the obvious, got the answer " I went onto a forum explained the problem and got that answer"

Problems as follows, has to top up the header tank daily, he has been filling it to the top!! heater blows coldish when stationary then warms up when moving. Had a look, no sign of leakage from pump, quite right about the heater, system does pressurise but does not seem to be excessive,good flow of coolant when engine running, anyone any ideas please before I start spending his money.

Not sure I understand your post, are you asking if this could have a leak??

I would start with a sniff test and confirm head gasket. If that shows ok, turn off the heaters and raise the engine speed to get it really hot and before the fan kicks in, switch it off and look for leaks.

Hi Chris, sorry the post is a bit woolly, no, not asking if it has a leak, I had a good look round and saw nothing obvious, going to do a pressure test next week when the van is back, usual story, customer not much money.worried that we are going to spend too much of his money, the symptoms just seemed a bit unusual, had it before when heater blows hot when at idle then goes cold on moving, but never this way round.
Hopefully more news next week

I dont think I would expect a modern diesel (Or even an old one, like mine!

) cabin heater to blow "Hot" at idle at this time of year, They simply dont produce enough waste heat!

My first port of call would be to change the header tank cap (In case it has got a bit weak, as they do...), change the thermostat (Might help the heating bit) and "educate" the owner about not topping up beyond the "Full" mark on the header tank and see where that takes you.
