Ford Transit 2.4 TDDi 2006 - Earth lead #

called out to complete loss of electrics found the earth lead has a diode or something similar which has gone open circuit, so no earth path for vehicle, replace lead checked charge rate ok, within a day same thing had happened the only thing that i picked up on was that the starter sounded as if it was turning over slowly or low battery. battery test ok.

Not wishing to appear too ignorant as there is no other leads on it as on BMW batt sensing what is it for and would a poor starter be likely to cause the problem?

Yes,you are almost there.It is a fusible link.Any excessive load on battery will cause it to blow .I would also check the main battery lead where it bolts onto the starter.These have a habit of coming loose and allows the lead to short on starter body.Just as an add-on to this ,I have a cust with few Citroen vans and if the drivers accidently start them in gear it blows the fusible link on top of the battery in the main power lead.Great design!

I agree with Andy, also if Transit is accidentally started in gear same problem

.
I know someone who has done away with this link for this very reason (his truck his rules)

Thanks for that info.

I think i will send the starter for testing before fitting another lead at £25 +VAT a go they are not cheap.

I have had this fault also, check the starter motor for metal particles from a failing DMF.

Hi kelly,

Just an idea, how about fitting two standard leads (a good set of jump leads would do) and then looking at the max current draw using an amp clamp ?

This should give you some feedback on the starter.

I encountered this problem with a customer's Transit last year and could not believe the "design" feature.

Their problem was caused by people attempting to start the van in gear.

I fitted a lead with a replaceable fuse in order to maintain the protection - it was a lot cheaper than the Ford lead - certainly for future mishaps

These transits are prone to starter faults,they fail due to enrty of particals from the dmf.If we replace the starter no warranty is given unless the dmf is sorted.1 vehicle had 3 starters in under a year fitted,good quality new units
