Ford Mondeo 2.0 NGD 2000 - Fault code P1246 Alternator? #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: NGD 2000cc

Cooling fan running at high speed continually. This has the smart charge system although there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the charging system this is the only fault code logged.
If my memory serves me correctly cooling fan running continually indicates a management problem, I've scoped the the three pins on the alternator and this is the results, pin 1 battery volts, pin 2 pulse width modified square wave with pulse width lengthening with electrical load, pin 3 battery voltage. I know from the test literature I have pin 1 should be a constant square wave and should be connected back to the ECU, but my problem is that according to Autodata only pin 2 connects to the ECU and both pin 1 & 3 connect to the instrument panel anybody got any info on the wiring?
Funny thing is charging is fine and PWM signal is responding to load.

P.S. I've tried a new Lucas brand alternator and the results are the same, we fitted a new ECU a couple of weeks previous to this fault occurring, original fault was no primary switching on ign coil circuit A.

It's probably not relevant, but I read somwhere that the smart charge system output is modified according to calculated battery temperature.
It uses the engine temperature in this calculation. So I suppose a cooling fan fault may have some bearing on this.

Thanks for the input Tom but is it a cooling fan fault? The ECU drives the relays that control the fan, but as I have said; I think if memory serves, the fan comes on to indicate a malfuntion in the management system(no MIL lamp fitted on this car).

Pin 1 Alternator feedback, MUST be a constant square wave pattern. New ECU from ford ? What scanner are you using.

Kevin the ECU was reconed by ADP, The scanner was a Snap On Solus Pro. If pin one is an input to the ECU do you know what the pin no is at the ECU so I can check continuity and any shorts as AD and Vivid don't show it going to the ECU but to the instrument panel? Pin 1 is just showing Battery volts with no square wave.

I think you have a faulty ECU or the pins may have been damaged during the change/previos testing. But will check my wiring diagrams.

Hi Mark,
are you sure this is smart charge?.
If it is the last of the 96-00 models then it is not, just normal operation.

(plug pic below is as on altternator not wiring harness).
