Fiat panda 1995-rear wheel arch rust.

Year of Manufacture *: 1995

This has failed MOT on "Excessive corrosion within prescribed area" (Or whatever the precise wording is)

The corrosion (as far as I can tell, I havent been told specifically and this is the only rust I can find) is at the rear of the rear wheel arch just above the bumper

However, the rust appears to be nowhere near the seatbelt mounts. I am not familiar with the details of current MOT rules on this (And they do seem to change over time..) but I thought the magic number was 30cm this looks much further than this to me...

What are the "rules" on corrosion these days (And what are the "Rules" concerning welding repairs too)

Post ALL the exact wording from the fail sheet please.

Arch is unlikely to be a prescribed area, but could result in sharp or jagged edge, which is also a fail.

Different standard of repair applies.

I had actually photocopied the fail with the intention of providing such detail...

Unfortunatly I think I threw it out when I tidied the van this evening...

I will attempt to get another copy tomorrow.

There are no jagged edges externally, the holed section is just the inside of the rear of the wheel arch. The rear seat belt mount is a renforced plate visible inside the wheel arch forward of the axle. The rust is "Right" at the back! it must be 18" from the seat belt mount! If the damage was any further back it would be in the front of the following vehicle!

I am wondering if the testers are being a bit anal about it (For whatever reason...

)?

As has been said, it must be within 30cm of a prescribed area. Which equates to an area of suspension, steering, brake, seatbelt or towbar mounting position. That 30cm radius is like a ball with the corrosion in the centre (so you now have a 60cm ball),

so even if the panels are not connected, it's still a failure if it's within 30cm....

However, the only other reason for failure is if the corrosion would affect the suspension, steering or brakes.

Just had to advise on a '95 Ford Escort estate with an almost non-existant rear crossmember!

Failed it on the rear inner chassis rails though!

As Tony has mentioned towbars are included but can be removed. Probably not the problem here as its a Panda

. This often happens to me so I just ring up my tester and ask. Sometimes he has written it down wrong and sometimes I have missed the corrosion that he has found.
