VW Polo 1.4 AEX 1997 - High oil pressure - Fixed #

Hi guys I have a problem with high oil pressure 60psi on tick over and it goes off the gauge when you rev it up I have renewed the oil pump which houses the relief valve the oil filter (genuine}.The guys that do my engine work suggested a blown head ,I have removed it and everything looks ok it only needed 4 thou taking off it .The pressure is that high it makes the oil aerated and milky colored .I knocked the test gauge off by accident the pressure nearly took my head off .I am a bit reluctant to put the head back on until I can find something any suggestions much appreciated john

Hi, when you say off the gauge, what pressure does your gauge go up to ? VW tend to run at a High pressure (in my experience) particularly when cold.

Don't think high pressure alone will cause milky / aeration. hydraulic systems run much higher pressure without that effect on oil.

what was the original concern ?

Hi Aidan my gauge goes up to 110 psi original problem was oil warning light coming on about 2 weeks after service we thought it had the vw problem with a blocked pickup the pressure is just as high when the engine is hot but the oil is aerated cheers john

I think that I would be taking a hard look at the filter/filter housing or the fitting. A collapsed filter will cause this but even then you should see the gauge "flick" back when the PR valve opens.

Hi

I am not sure that 60/ 120 cold is out of norm for VW cold, but would think it would drop a bit when hot. I am not 100 % but remember be surprised by a VW golf a good few years ago when I tested the oil pressure.

If it was seriously high would in not jack the lifters ?

Not got a clue why it should look aerated / milking, no water loss ? or air bleeding into pickup ?

what was the oil pressure with old pump ?

Hi John to eliminate compression pressure remove one plug at a time and run engine with caution obviously.

Hi Andrew and Aidan in reply to your questions oil pressure was the same with the old pump I agree if the pressure was to high it should affect the filter ,unfortunatley Andrew the head is off so I cant do what you suggest ,having looked again at the head gasket if you separate the gasket there is oil in between the gasket I am clutching at straws now so I am going to build it back up next week will let you know the outcome cheers John

Hi guys rebuilt head oil pressure when hot on tick over now 60 psi .no more aerated oil so I can only presume the head was blowing into oil gallery thanks for the input john
