MGF 1.8 VVC 1998 - Setting valve timing after head removal #

Hello everyone happy new year to you all
I have been asked to do a head gasket on the above with vvc timing is there a special pin kit for these,

hi neil,no pin kit its as standars ,however if you have to remove cams there is a proceedure to follow to set vvc , plenty of info on the net hth.

The cams do not need to be removed from the head for a gasket swap.

Hi all.
Mark, I think Keith has mentioned that incase Neil wants to remove the cams to get the head skimmed?
I did one of these a while back and spoke to local Rover dealer who said that they always fitted a complete new head???? I found a rebuild company somewhere in the west country that could do the whole job for me but before I sent it away I decided to have a go at taking the cams out myself. From what I remember it was a bit of a fiddle but I managed it without any special tools but loads of patience.

Hi Bryan,
Yes, you are right, if the head needs re-facing the cams need to be removed. Perhaps I mis-read the post. The head does not need stripping just to change the gasket.

As you say if the cams need to be removed, the job is a bit fiddly, there are locking pins and locating plates for the VVC units, but with a bit of care and understanding you can use a couple of drills and work your way round them.

PS. The first one I did was a box of bits that somebody else had removed and stripped right down to the internals of the VVc units and then lost the plot. That took a bit of head scratching to suss it out. (and a phone call to Kelly Clarke)

Hi Neil i dont know where you are in the country
but Headmasters in Doncaster can skimm the head with cams still fitted to the cylinder head, has done loads for me.I think he has some sort of rig where he turns the cams while the head is being skimmed. Hope this helps Darren

not been on line for a few days so missed this one but to have the head skimmed yes the cams have to be removed. Just slacken the 2 units at each end do not remove completely and then the vvc will stay more or less timed up, as the cam remains in the carrier, just align the pin holes when it all goes back together. if units are removed there are special holding tools reqd to put it all back together, done several of these and rebuilt them for other garages.
On reasemmbly make sure the cam carrire is torqued correctly as the geared rod will jam and then the vvc machanism will not work.
