VW Passat 1.9 TDi BXE 2006 - Hand brake problem, code 02443 #

Year of Manufacture *: 2006
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: 1.9 TDI BXE

Handbrake light is permanently on in dash and handbrake operating switch is permanently illuminated. The handbrake is not on and the calipers will not operate.

Fault code showing - 02443 Control Head not a plausible signal. (Snap-On Modis)

I have ordered a switch but am not sure if this will cure it. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks...

The handbrake button gives trouble,fit a new button but there is a update that main dealer updates the control unit cheers Con

Hi Roger
make sure you have the updated parking brake button. Then with the ignition
off, remove negative battery cable, wait 20 seconds then hook back up.
Switch ignition on and step on brake pedal. Operate parking brake
though 2 cycles (close then open). That should make the 02443 DTC
sporadic and can be cleared.

Hi All,

Roger, did you get to the bottom of this? My garage has a similar vehicle (05 plate) with the same fault and code 02443. The switch has been replaced from TPS and the procedure outlined by Mark has been undertaken with no success. Any ideas from anyone would be most appreciated. I understand TPS keeps the control units in stock which tells me something!

I sometimes think technology has gone too far. Just replaced hand-brake cable on my van (£19) which took an hour. Simples!

Hi Pete,

Has the vehicle in question had the upgrade to the EHB control unit.

After two new H/B buttons in 6 weeks, my dealer then thought to let me know of this upgrade

Hi all,

This turned out to be an ECU problem. The ECU is tucked behind the dashboard and was full of green stuff. No idea how it was contaminated and thought something from the cup holder might have done the damage. Anyway, a new ECU was fitted and cured the problem.
