Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. Went back earlier on today and eventually got fault to manifest itself. Just before this I noticed the red LED on the aftermarket immobiliser (...didn't I mention this before?) flashing intermittently, and a relay somewhere under the dash occasionally clicking. Yes, you've guessed it. It was this immobiliser, that the owner had said hadn't worked since he owned the car, that was faulty. Chopped it out out and reconnected leads and all worked perfectly!
