Citroen Xantia 98 1.9td - Hydraulic problem Archived Message

This problem has been slowly getting worse over the past month. When started from cold it can take from 3 to 10 minutes for 'stop' light to go out and suspension to get to normal height. If vehicle is moved the brakes have almost no effect. Pumping the pedal sometimes cures the problem-the light goes out, car rises to correct height and brakes are ok, all within 10 secs, which makes me think the pump is ok. When driving, the stop light sometimes comes on, nomally for a few seconds, but today it was on for about 3mins whilst on the motorway. I have told him not to drive it till it's fixed. The fluid is clean and at the correct level, the filter is not blocked and the low fluid switch on the sight glass has been disconnected. Any ideas before I start buying parts?
