John, I have seen one garage do this seemingly impossible task by first removing the steering wheel and instrument cluster.Behind the cluster is quite a large circular hole in the sheetmetal.Through this hole the clutch cable plastic link is visible with the aid of a small lamp placed in the area above the clutch pedal.By working through the hole they managed to access and change the link.Job still took over 2 hours though.You might like to try that method next time,it did not involve removal of the cross shaft or the pedal.
