hi lads
just like you to hear this one , a mate of mines mothering law has got this escort and she has been having trouble starting it and it stalling at junctions until it is completely warmed up. so she took it in to our local garage who done a few checks then give it a service said every thing was now fine , however a few days later when it was cold again same thing happened , so she took it back to the garage and complained said it was no better and she was told there was nothing that they could do it would need to go to a main dealer,so she booked it in to a local ford dealer who plugged it in and a couple of hours later she had a phone call saying that she needed a new ecu and coil pack very expensive i would think
anyway you guessed it next cold spell no go again ,
this was when my mate happened to mention to me that she was having this problem and said could i take a look so i was a bit reluctant concidering every body that been involved so far!
i suggested that she take it back and complain about it but she said she had very little faith in anybodys ability to fix it
so before i committed myself i had a quick scan of the archives found loads of very useful information
so best place to start i thought was at the beginning:
battery ok
fuel pressure 2.8bar with vac pipe off
injecting ok
good spark
timing ok
done a relative compression test everything was all over the place
so carried out compression test
cyl 1 = 120 psi
cyl 2 = 70
cyl 3 = 70
cyl 4 = 70
that why it wont start when its cold
had a look at last service sheet 5ltrs of 20w50
added
duh
tow start vehicle (it was the only way)
added some engine flush
went for a 15 min thrash
changed oil filter put in correct oil 5w30
left to stew overnight in a cold yard
next morning started first time
has been no problem ever since
thanks lads for all the information
i took the car to the local garage and suggested that they all take a look at ukautotalk site
and told them NOT TO FORGET THE BASICS?
also went to the local ford dealer and said the same thing they have promised to look in to the matter.
thanks again for all the help that i found in the archives it just shows with a bit of patience and information even the tricky ones can be solved
