Mazda 323 F 1998 - Replaced coil but spark is very weak - non start Archived Message

I was working on this car before Christmas. To my Knowledge the spark was wery poor(0-3kv). I replaced the coil/distributor assembly but afterwards the spark was still the same, poor spark and no start. To be honest the customer got fed up waiting so he bought the car to another garage.I found out recently that the timing belt had slipped and that, that was the problem.
The customer brought the car into me yesterday(to fit a wheel bearing assembly) and i took the opportunity to check the spark with the fuel pump disconnected. There was 17kv present. What I want to know is, is it possible for the spark to be affected on these vehicles when the timing is out.I can't see how this is possible because all the relavant sensors are in the distributor. Thank you and I will be interested to hear your opinions.
    Regards
