Renault Megane 1.6 2003 - Cam variator replacement info required # Archived Message

This petrol car sounds like a diesel on startup when cold and it appears to be the cam variator.
Obtained a new one and have read confliciting stories re fitting them. I've the cam tools and have done a few belts ok, apart from the poor access!
As the cam sprockets are not keyed my query is how do you ensure the sprocket/variator assembly is "timed" to the other sprocket so the belt will fit properly and maintain the correct timing. I'd thought of tightening the bolt with the old belt on to ensure it's timed ok.
I've heard that the variator needs to be turned untill it locks before locking the sprocket to cam bolt fully as well.
Any comments from those who have done one would be most welcome.
