hello Wayne,
From your description I Did one of these a couple of years ago same code ( it also made a loud metalic banging noise when full pressure was being met ), So please forgive vagueness
If this is the earlier system with a small ( tennis ball size ) black sphere by the master cylinder/brake fluid reservoir with a paint dot on it, can't remember what colour it is to signify if its been changed before. This gas filled sphere will be at fault. to renew it de-pressurise it pump brake pedal and unscrew it some brake fluid will be lost and simply screw new sphere back on.
