The make and model are possibly not too relevant here as this post is to point out a possible problem with a batch of bearings and hopefully save someone else some grief.
I fitted a new front wheel bearing - on this car, a quite straightforward job thankfully.
With everything fitted, checked and the wheel refitted I checked for play as a precaution. There was loads of play in the new bearing. By now my customer had arrived to collect his car as arranged.
I re-checked everything and then removed the whole assembly to re-press the hub into the bearing in case I had made an error. Still play present.
I sent the customer home in a loan car and got on with the next job whilst deciding if I had finally lost the plot.
Ordered another bearing from another factor just to guarantee a different brand of bearing. Fitted alternative bearing and no problem.
The faulty bearing is branded "FAVA" from Korea. The exact references: ILJIN IJI31009.
I will now be avoiding any bearing of this brand like the plague!
