    Hi Paul,
    I have one of the fork type ball joint splitters but have probably only used it a few times in many years (usually on the vauxhall track rod ends with the pressed steel type of strut). The answer is a big ball pien hammer to shock the arm/hub assy on the outside of the point where the taper passes through. You could also put your scissor type one on with a bit of pressure and then use an air chisel to shock it. Most track rod ends for example, will "jump" out with one, or at most two hits. The shock needs to be applied sideways so as to release the taper. I have done this on very big trucks and construction plant with nearly 100% success rates. I have even used a lump hammer the opposite side as an anvil which squashes the taper joint when you hit it. Having said all this, I have also on rare occassions had to resort to the "gas axe".
