    Hi Dave,
    For what it's worth....
    I had an Audi A3 last week (don't know how related they are?) with a permanent brake light issue , although they went off when the ignition was turned off though. It turned out that fuse F7 in the underbonnet fusebox was blown, when this was replaced the brake lights behaved. The fuse on this car was blowing due to a fault with the clutch pedal position sensor.
    The other thing I would check is the wiring in the tailgate shut where it goes through the rubber boot.
