Hi Mike, If the little wire. ( blue/? ) Stays neg all the time and it is connected properly to the D+ Terminal on the alternator, Then the Light Cannot come on and go out properly. ( unless Alt wire is connected wrongly to the oil switch or similar. ) For the Alternator to work properly, It Needs the blue wire connecting to D+ Then with the ignition turned on, this wire should have approx 2volts on it. Start the Engine and the Voltage on the D+ Terminal should then go to approx 14v. ( this is what turns the light off as then theres the same voltage at each side of the bulb so no current flows through it. ( Also on some escorts, theres a relay tapped into this wire at the fuse box and this feed also powers the relay windings. Also Check the Voltage on the heavy wire connected to B+ Terminal and that should also be approx 14V. Old Escorts suffer with Bad Connections in the wiring between the Starter motor and Alternator, and also bad crimps on the battery cables, We Used to remove all the cables and solder up the connections and make up a new harness between the starter motor and Alternator. They Then charge better than they did when they came out of the factory. p,s The Cable from starter to alternator usually has a crimp connection in the middle which rots away. Comparing voltage readings directly at the alternator and then at the battery gives you an idea of how much voltage drop you have on the cables. I also think on some of them we also had to remove the mounting brackets and clean them up as they were corroded behind and had bad eaths on them. H.T.H. Tony
