Firstly I want to thank everyone who responded (sorry for the delay in getting back) & everyone who has allowed me to take their time on the phone over this.

I managed to sort it today after having my aircon guy call out to de gas the system. By chance a trade customer mentioned that a fella had sorted a similar problem for him. I rang to see if he would ease my pain & after telling the story so far, he asked me to explain my EKA entry method. "I turn the key to the lock possition for 5 seconds" I said. "STOP" "you are doing it wrong!"

This is what he told me.....

    1) Lock the car & stand back for a minute.
    2) put your key in & go straight into the sequence, with your first key stroke being the 1st in the unlock sequence.
    3) keep entering the code, steadily & firmly & when you get to the end, you end up in the locked position.
    4) immediately unlock the car & observe the LED in the cluster, it should light for 1 second & go out.
    5) set a timer for 5 minutes (6 to be safe) After the 5th minute, you have a 10 minute window to start it up.
    6) after 6 minutes, unlock the car & turn on the ignition & the LED will go out & no two tone sounder will be heard.
    7) start the car & proceed with the plip programming routine.

He pointed out quite rightly, that this procedure is designed for idiots i.e. customers! (I know what you are thinking ) So it cant be too complicated. He also said that he thought I should go with the EKA that Autodiagnos provided. Well with bugger all to lose I set about it with minimal hope. I didn't hear any beeps or alarms as I entered the EKA & I walked away whilst setting the countdown timer on my phone. Six minutes later I unlocked the car (it has auto lock enabled) & turned the ignition. BINGO!!!!

I started it up & proceeded to re sync the plips (with the engine running). The first time I tried they didn't sync, but on the second attempt I heard a chime from the first plip & then nothing from the other. (Maybe a good idea to mark your plips as good & bad, so that you sync the good one first).

I left the engine running whilst I went through the plip syncing process & yet again I don't get a response when I press the lock button for 3 seconds. On the second attempt I succeed & one of the plips does provoke a response. I continued through the process & the final screen displays "program successful" I then ordered a new plip. in the mean time I re performed all aspects of the job several times to confirm the methods used. The EKA entry method worked time & time again & Autodiagnos performed well. The only niggle with Autodiagnos is the EKA displayed is wrong when you enter directly into "plip program "menu. You MUST go into the dedicated menu for "retrieve EKA" & this shows the true code. Weirdly enough, once you have done this, the correct code is now displayed when you go into the other "plip program" menu.

Later on today I managed to program the new plip supplied with the 22 digit code (the first & last digits need to be dropped).

All I have to do now is put the evaporator back in & get it re gassed. Job done & lesson well learned!

I have to put this screw up down to my lack of experience & preparation. If I knew last week what I know now, then I would have done it easily. All the info is there on that Autodiagnos link & all I needed was a little luck & a cooler head. If the Plip had responded first time around then it would have been an easy 20 quid. As is stands it has been a frustrating but ultimately rewarding experience.

Thanks very much to everyone that I pestered for advice.

    Cheers all

    Dave
