BMW 635 CSI 1987 - Transmission code 54 #Archived Message

Here is one for the older heads, i have this car in with code 54 transmission lock out unknown parameters. I have no reference for this code , can someone help? Car has been driving fine and on start up this morning it appears to be locked in 2nd gear. Reverse etc are ok. Did these have a gear position sensor at this age?
