A simple method i was shown years ago to hold the valves in place whilst doing the seals was to remove the plug, set piston at bdc, then feed a long thin rope into the cylinder (make sure you don't lose the end), finally turn the crank to compress the rope and hold the valves, once done turn the crank back and pull out the rope. simple and saves the cost of a gasket, strech bolts, labour etc etc. and it works. also you don't have to worry about being called away and someone else needing to use the airline while you're gone (it's happend to me in the past) downside is it's not so useful if the cams have to come out and the timing can be mucked up.
