Ian I look after 2 of these of a similar age to yours and both have had the same problem, although the hoods were up not down. Turned out to be the battery in both cases, the voltage dropped on starting the car and spiked the BSI. The BSI needs to be re-set using the correct procedure in the archives and that fixed both of mine, but only till the next cold start.

Have you tried reading codes and data from the hood and BSI ecu?
