Vauxhall Astra 2.0 DTL 16v 2000 - Fuel return pipes leaking air # Archived Message

    Hi all.

We have this Astra in for very difficult starting. This problem has been gradually getting worse over a couple of years! If the vehicle was left for more than a couple of days it wouldn't start without easy start but then it was ok until left again for a few days.

Now the vehicle will not start even if left overnight, and cuts out after a few seconds, the customer has decided to get it fixed!!

I have replaced the leak-off pipes to elininate them as they were all perished but The engine still will not start unless I clamp the leak-off pipe near the pump. If I leave the clamp in place the engine will start even if left overnight. I have also noticed that there is no fuel being returned from the injectors.

In the past I have heard 'bridging seals' mentioned in reference to these engines but I was under the impression that they caused oil contamination in the diesel rather than air leaks. Where is the returned fuel going?

No codes listed and the engine runs fine with the pipe clamped. Take the clamp off and the engine will stall - even if you keep your foot down.

Any suggestions/pointers would be most appreciated.

    T.I.A. - Paul.
