BMW Mini Cooper 2002 - Brake lights stuck on - Fixed # Archived Message

I dont know if this issue has been covered here already, if it has I apologise.
I had a woman bring above vehicle to me today with brake lights on constantly [ignition on]. Had it to BMW who had quoted £1300 to replace multi-function unit and programme it and because they say unit was damaged due to water ingress it would be extra to fix water leak!!!
I pulled up the carpet on drivers side and there was very slight water damage to outside of unit. Removed mfu opened it up and it was perfect inside. Wiring and plug ok also.
Looking at a wiring diagram I could see that there is a brake light diode in the loom. The diode sits about 150mm from mfu taped to loom going to rear of vehicle. I removed it and saw that it was corroded, tested faulty, replaced and brake lights back to normal.
As I said this may have already been covered but hope it is of use to someone.
Also, a quick way to check the brake light switch [if the brake lights arent working at all] on BMWs and MINIs is to disconnect it and if its a faulty switch the brake lights will come on. hth Colin.
