Hi Dave. I would check at the turbo outlet. If you start the engine with a rag over outlet and blip it, drops of oil will soon show up (as oil pressure rises) if turbo is faulty. Sorry, I don't know the specific layout but it should be possible to locate the source if it is before the inlet manifold. A puff on startup would indicate oil running into one or more cylinders while sitting, hence misfire. This is unlikely to come immediately from the turbo, so it must be pooling somewhere. Has the exhaust got liquid oil in it? Can you check the exhaust pipe temps with an infrared thermometer? Might help to find a particular cylinder problem. It could still be a valve/guide/seal problem (or you might have two problems !!). Had a smoky Merc G-Wagen recently and #1 pipe showed up straightaway with IR gun as much hotter than others - head-gasket leaking oil from cam feed into front cylinder above idle speed. I've used TurboTechnics a couple of times - good service. Sounds like you are a fair way from sources of help! Bearing that in mind I'd keep checking before condemning the turbo. Compression test? Re the Modis problem - have a day off on Fridays. Peter
