Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDDi 2005 - Battery light on, charging fault # Archived Message

    Hi lads,
I have this car in today with the battery light on at all times. While driving the speedo is not working and all of the gauges (temp. fuel speedo and rev counter ) all go fully clockwise with the air bag, engine management and battery light on..The voltage is at 14.5 - 18.3 volts and the battery never went flat.I disconnected the 3 pin connector on the altenator,i read in the archives that doing this reverts the smart charge system to a conventional system, and the output drops to 13.2 volts max.I have tested the battery and its ok.
    I have 2 codes,U1039-standard corporate protocol..invalid or missing data,P0500 vehicle speed sensor.
I think it might need an alternator but not 100% sure.
    Any ideas welcomed,
    Thanks,
    Dave.
