I have been using the same method as Dave for testing oil coolers for many years. I now have a cylinder of nitrogen with regulator for testing air con systems and find it better to use to apply pressure, simply because it is regulated and can leave connected.
Also agree with Dave not 100% test. I have had oil ( transit ) coolers that leaks, but would not show on this test even with 150psi in it. VAG coolers i have tested have always shown faulty.
