    Hullo Paul,
There seems to be a fair history of problems with this type. Ten (?) years ago we fitted a secondhand gearbox/flywheel but it only lasted a few months. Eventually became pointless to keep repairing and car was scrapped. Park/drive/neutral selection etc. became erratic.
With hindsight I think a lot of the problems were with the brushes that energised the 'auto' clutch. Basically the drive is provided by iron filings that fill the small gap between the driving & driven plates of the 'flywheel/clutch'. The filings are energised by current flowing through the brushes/sliprings which makes the filings become semi-rigid. The current appears to be controlled by load and revs.
The drive goes on to a variable pulley & belt drive inside the main box (eg Daf, Gradua). Take up just above idle became erratic/harsh which led to driver being uncomfortable in stop/start traffic. Interesting and actually quite a simple piece of kit when pulled apart.
The brushes are easily removeable from outside and are certainly worth a look.
Good luck & don't lose too many hours on it!
    Peter
