Hmmn, seem to have hit a nerve here. I cant help feeling that the "Pinnacle" of motor car development was embodied in the late 80's Volvo 240 with the K-Jetronic injection system. I recon that this must be one of the best practical family cars ever built! At this point, the "new" technology provided genuine advantages over the more traditional systems but without compromising reliability or ease of repair. After that things started to go downhill. Now it is really bad, I cannot confidentally reccomend any post-2000 diesel car to anybody for fear of them comming back to me and complaining about what a can of worms it turned out to be! (petrol ones havent declined quite so dramatically, but they are still bad!) I have had a recent customer (whose broken fan belt caused over £200 worth of colateral damage due to damaged oil seals) with a renault espace diesel who recons that over the last 90,000 miles he has had to spend over £7000 on repairs (thats "repairs", not routine maintenance! Flywheels, Clutches, MAF sensors, EGR valves, Injectors and so on!) Well I guess its good for somebody! He asked me what to get and I had to say I really dont know, they are all like that nowadays! As for Light commercials, the Transit 2.5D/TD was about as good as they get, (the VW transporter 1.9D/TD was pretty good too(before they introduced electronic controll)) but they dont make those any more either!
