    Camshaft sensor Questions Archived Message

Talking to a fellow mechanic the other day, the subject of cam sensors came up (again).
Whilst we fully understand the need to know the cam position on Variable valve timing engines, why is a cam sensor needed in engines that have no moveable cam timing adjustment?
In engines such as this, what info is provided that is not already shown by the crank sensor? (apart from ,maybe greater accuracy?)
I've read a little about extra fuelling info, but still think that the crank sensor should provide that info anyway.
Why do some engines have none ,some 1 while others have 2?
Pherhaps more importantly why are they so bleadin' unreliable!!?
    Cheers

    Colin.

P.S Sorry to appear ignorant, but working in this trade on my own for 30 years means I have to find these things out for myself, without having access to factory/dealer courses etc.
